Great Tobago Island – The Perfect Snorkeling and Dive Site
Great Tobago is a 210-acre uninhabited island located approximately six miles west of Jost van Dyke. It is, together with its sister island Little Tobago, the westernmost of the British Virgin Islands. The National Parks Trust protects these islands. They are two of the most isolated and protected in the BVI.
Great Tobago is a designated Important Bird Area. It is surrounded by arduous cliffs that mostly extend well below the water. Therefore you will find this to be a fantastic dive and snorkel destination. However, anchoring is illegal. All potential anchoring sites are indeed coral reefs. Anchoring would destroy them.
Great Tobago Island | Places to See and Things to Do
Bird Watching. The island is home to the third-largest population of nesting seabirds. It’s the only nesting place for the incredibly beautiful frigate bird. You will see blue-footed boobies and brown pelicans along your snorkel trip. Also, long-tailed tropic birds and laughing gulls are some of the birds that roam around the island.
Snorkeling and Diving. Enjoy over 15 snorkel and dive sites. It is indeed an incredible experience to see the coral reefs close up. You can observe brilliantly colored fish throughout the area. For the experienced diver, we recommend exploring Mercurious Rock, an incredible cave system bursting with marine wildlife.
Marinas and Anchorages
It is illegal to anchor here. This would cause the destruction of the coral reefs surrounding Great Tobago Island. As a matter of fact, the BVI Marine Police frequently patrol this area frequently.
