Get Ready for… Caribbean Carnival Season
It’s late July, and the Caribbean Carnival season is upon us. Local celebrations span from the British Virgin Islands in the north to Grenada in the south at this time of year.
If you are in the area, it’s in full swing next week, with the BVI emancipation celebration bank holiday stretching from the last Saturday in July to the first Wednesday in August. Many local provisioners and marine suppliers close during the holidays. A few islands like Antigua and Grenada celebrate their Carnivals simultaneously.
The BVI is not alone; carnival celebrations during the next couple of weeks also take place on:
Saba, Antigua, Statia, Nevis, Barbados, Anguilla, and finally culminating on Grenada the week after August 13th.
The name for The Carnival in the BVI is “The Festival.” The Festival celebrates the 1834 Emancipation of the slaves on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Most stores, banks, and shops close during this holiday period. Festival usually occurs from the last week of July into the first week of August. Banks on Tortola close from Saturday through Wednesday, reopening on Thursday.
““Festival” in the Caribbean involves lots of live music, fun, eating, drinking, and partying centered around “The Village” in Road Town, Tortola. The Village in Road Town is an area with vendors selling local food, drinks, and adult beverages with a stage at its center for performances. There is a Grand Parade with Floats and bands parading through the streets of Road Town, Tortola.
BVI visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the local festivities and to view some of the local cultures. So, if you visit Tortola and the BVI during the Festival, HAVE FUN !!!
