Mustique Island is a small private island in the Grenadines. The island covers 1,400 acres and has several coral reefs. The land fauna includes tortoises, herons, and many other species. Its year-round population of about 500 mostly lives in Lovell, Britannia Bay, and Dover villages.
The history of the island of Mustique, and of the Grenadines in general, dates back to the 15th century when Spanish sailors first sighted this more or less linear group of small rocky islands and named them ‘Los Pájaros’ or ‘the birds’ because they resembled a small flock of birds scattered across the sea in flight. During the 17th century, the Grenadines were renamed by pirates who used the bays as shelter to hide their ships and treasure.
European planters later utilized the islands to grow sugar cane. This lucrative industry lasted until the nineteenth century when sugar extraction from European-grown sugar beet dramatically lessened the worldwide demand for sugar. The planters abandoned Mustique sugar plantations. The scrubs dominated the area leaving only remnants of the sugar mill at “Endeavor” and “Cotton House.”
Colin Tennant purchased Mustique in 1958 with the guidance of the 3rd Baron Glenconner. Therefore, they both developed the island. Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, the sister of Queen Elizabeth II, accepted his gift of a 10-acre plot of land as a wedding present in 1960. She then built a residence called Les Jolies Eaux. In 1979 Mustique Island became a family estate with the homeowners as shareholders.
The island is owned by the Mustique Company, which in turn is owned by the island’s homeowners. In fact, the island has approximately 100 private villas; many rented out. In addition, there is one hotel called the Cotton House and one privately owned four-bedroom hotel called Firefly.
Today Mustique retains its natural beauty and tranquility, protecting the environment and offering guests one of the world’s most secure and pristine islands. Mustique is a picturesque and secluded island surrounded by nine beaches of pure white sand, with gently swaying coconut palms and warm turquoise waters.
Macaroni Beach is perhaps the most famous of Mustique’s beaches and is situated on the island’s east coast. Other popular beaches on the Atlantic or Caribbean are Endeavour, Lagoon, L’Ansecoy, and Simplicity, several of which have picnic hut facilities.
