“You Make the Memories, We’ll Make the Arrangements”

Great Thatch Island British Virgin Islands lies just to the north of St. John. It is an uninhabited island and a part of the British Virgin Islands National Parks system. Little Thatch is next to Great Thatch Island.

There’s a ruin hidden deep in the tangle of tropical foliage possibly remaining from the sugar plantation era. Great Thatch is a short boat ride from West End, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and St. John, US Virgin Islands. You may sail past Great Thatch when sailing from St. John or St. Thomas to Jost Van Dyke.

Weather for Great Thatch Island

Because of its close proximity to St. John, Great Thatch island shares the same weather conditions. Expect mostly warm to hot temperatures with humidity. Trade winds cool the heat and make for excellent sailing.

Places to See and Things to Do

  • Although the island is uninhabited, there is plenty to see and do. Lace up your walking shoes and hike through the thick vegetation to find the ruins of an old plantation. You’ll see a crumbling cookhouse, animal corral, and a cistern.
  • Fish. Great Thatch island is popular with local fishermen, and for good reason.
  • Snorkel. There are many excellent snorkeling sites in the BVI, and Great Thatch is certainly one of them. The southern side of the island (facing St. John) has a large calm and well-protected bay that invites exploration and snorkeling. If you are chartering 76-foot sailing catamaran TRANQUILITY, Captain Tony Trappe will direct you to the best places to see marine life.
  • More Snorkeling in the area. Sail south from Great Thatch and Tortola through Soper’s Hole toward The Indians and The Caves off Pelican Island. Swim all the way around the Indians to see beautiful coral in all brilliant colors; fire, black, and brain plus a kaleidoscope of colorful fish. Then move on to The Caves; swim into all three of these caves for an unforgettable adventure.
  • Great Thatch ruins. Explore some culture by discovering some ruins on Great Thatch. Learn the history of how these ruins are the remaining dwellings that were set free with the assistance of some Wesleyan missionaries.
